  35. The most current orbital elements from the NASA Prediction Bulletins are
  36. carried on the Celestial BBS, (513) 427-0674, and are updated several times
  37. weekly.  Documentation and tracking software are also available on this
  38. system.  As a service to the satellite user community, the most current of
  39. these elements are uploaded weekly to sci.space.  This week's elements are
  40. provided below.  The Celestial BBS may be accessed 24 hours/day at 300,
  41. 1200, or 2400 baud using 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.

  267. It's a small article, so I'll reprint it all.  On rereading it, I note
  268. that it doesn't actually specify privacy of families, but that was NASA's
  269. line last I heard, and I can't imagine who else's privacy would be involved.

  273. "Challenger:  The Final Words"
  274.  
  275. Nearly five years after the event, the legal wrangling continues over
  276. audiotapes of the space shuttle Challenger's final moments.  Several
  277. news organizations (including Time) sued NASA under the Freedom of 
  278. Information Act to disclose certain aspects of its investigation into
  279. the accident.  Most eventually withdrew their actions, but the New York
  280. Times has continued to petition for tapes to back up a NASA transcript
  281. of cabin conversation.  In the official version, the final comment is 
  282. pilot Michael Smith's "uh-oh," indicating he might have been aware of
  283. impending danger.  A federal appeals court agreed with NASA that 
  284. releasing the voice material would constitute an invasion of privacy.
  285. George Freeman, a Times lawyer, says the paper has not decided if it 
  286. will appeal.  But a NASA investigator has confirmed suspicions that the 
  287. astronauts were conscious of their fate, and that among the last words
  288. from the craft were those of one astronaut saying to another, "Give me
  289. your hand."

  293. Now, just because someone leaked it doesn't mean it's true, but it
  294. wouldn't be inconsistent with the evidence of the breathing packs that
  295. they were alive and at least briefly conscious.
  296.  
  297. As to what NASA might be afraid of;  they don't want people to be 
  298. any madder at them then they are now, and this would certainly put
  299. them in a poor light, particularly because of their decision not to
  300. install an escape system.  Not that I think that almost certainly injured
  301. astronauts would have much chance to escape from a badly damaged, 
  302. tumbling cabin with the current system.  Still, I would prefer to
  303. have the chance to try, even if only for the distraction.  Two and half
  304. minutes is a long, long time to helplessly wait to die.

  324. No, if the Soviets charge $10M for the trip then the people running the
  325. lottery will make (GROSS REVENUE) the difference between their ticket
  326. sales and $10M.  So if they sell $40M in tickets, they will gross $30M.
  327. If they sell $2M in tickets, they will LOSE $8M.  But what happens in
  328. this case?  Does the winner still get his ride?  More importantly,
  329. if in this case NO ONE gets his ride, will the people who bought tick-
  330. ets get their money back?  And do the promoters have insurance to cover
  331. the lawsuit your loved ones will bring if you are the "winner" and are
  332. killed or injured?

  334. Dammit, this deal STINKS!  If someone wants to promote a scam, fine,
  335. but DON'T do it in "sci.space" and DON'T ask the readers of "sci.space"
  336. to make phone calls SUPPORTING the scam.

  340. going to make GROSS REVENUE.  They will only make a profit if they sell
  341. enough tickets to cover their expenses.  I believe that if they open
  342. their books up you will see that they have very little chance of 
  343. making a profit -- that the whole thing is a scam and that they have
  344. NO INTENTION of providing anybody with a ride into space.  This is
  345. what the local DA thinks, and I happen to agree with him.
